A friend told me once, “Do what fills you up, and the rest will fall into place.”
I’m not sure if she came up with that herself, or if it comes from a book, but I’ve been living by that phrase since the day she told it to me.
I remember exactly when she said it…. We were talking on the phone while I was driving home from work. I was telling her about how I felt bad for doing things I liked to do: working out, reading, etc. and seemed to devote “less” energy to other things I should be doing like studying, cleaning, etc.
.
.
This is how I interpreted it:
You can’t pour from an empty cup. You can’t devote effort and time to things when you don’t have the energy or headspace for! The more I think about it, the more I realize, the times when I prioritize the more “serious” things in life and neglect my fun things, the worse I feel and I am less productive.
When I don’t workout, read for fun, work on my little projects around the house, etc., I get super sluggish, unfocused, unmotivated, and I’m just longing to do the things that make me feel good.
.
.
If I only did the things I HAD TO do and nothing that made me happy, I would have nothing to fill me up. Nothing to motivate me, nothing to keep me moving forward, nothing to pour from.
Now, I’m not saying that I neglect all of my responsibilities, but if I have to choose to work out or clean, I’m going to work out because the cleaning will get done! The work will get done. There is a balance and its hard to have a balanced life all the time…
Sometimes I get lost in it all. Sometimes I depend on my support system to help me find myself again… but that’s what they’re here for lol! The people that love you want to see you happy, so they do what they can to help.
My happiness is defined by my fullness and I do a lot better in life when I’m happy and well rested.

.
.
Are you full? If not, make a list of the things that make you happy, then do the things that make you happy.
